I love being in the garden. I quite often paint my cone flowers. They come in such luscious colours. I originally received these flowers from my mother's garden. I love to sit on the grass, observe, draw and paint. If it is not summer, I will sketch and paint from some of my photos. When I look back at these paintings, it brings back that summer feeling of warmth and timelessness.

I lived in Japan for four years, and studied the art of shodo, Japanese calligraphy painting. Although I have been back in Canada for many years now, I still find that my aesthetic has changed, and it comes out in my work.

FIELD OF POPPIES, acrylic on yupo, 20" x 24", framed, sold to Toronto, ON
FIRST: EAU CLAIRE FLOWERS, acrylic on yupo paper, 20" x 24", currently on private loan
This painting was created up at a retreat near Collingwood, cottage country north of Toronto
SECOND: EAU CLAIRE 2, 24" X 24", acrylic on gallery canvas
The first painting is yupo, and then I experimented on canvas for the second painting. It was interesting to note the differences. With yupo, I was able to attain a depth with the background; with the canvas, the flowers have a more pop art feel. Both sold to Toronto, ON

Jill is my mother, and she studied needlework at the Royal School of Needlework in London in the 50s. These two paintings are inspired by her design made by cutout shapes and then delicately embroidered with elaborate stitching. I used the green background to further evoke a 50s feel. My first painting I played with colour but the second one I used only black and white to play with value, and to keep closer to the original.

RADIANCE, 36" X 48", mixed media on gallery canvas
I started with the background and used many papers from my past, such as the beautiful washi paper wrapping stamped from a store in Imadate, Japan. This town is no longer, as it was merged with Echizen village. I lived near here and would often go to the festivals, and use the paper to study making Japanese dolls. The bright yellow paper is from there and I can not find paper of such fibre and texture anywhere here in Canada. Other papers include photocopies of my family's land deeds from England, pieces of stencils, papers from Nepal, hand painted tissue papers, Japanese calligraphy papers and acrylic skins.
